Stefan and I have been watching this series (on HBO) together over the past week. (We do not watch HBO as the norm-we knew this series was coming on.) The series was based on the book John Adams by David McCULLOUGH. The book is huge in volume, but the series stayed true to the letters that the book contained.
Stefan had read the book when it came out in 2001, I have not read it yet- but I would like to now that I have seen this series. I have heard Stefan and others claim that this is a great book! It's been neat for me to see the history of these first Presidents come to life. We view these men as great patriots/Presidents of our
past-but to see how they were such ordinary men-has helped me to view history in a different light. For example, they were real men who struggled through life. It showed the reality of how events truly came about, and not just seeing it or reading it through the eyes of the "textbooks".
It was also neat to see how T. Jefferson and J. Adams related with one another. They were such good friends but were separated by their views on how to govern. John Adams was often given to self pity, anger, and was at times easily swayed in his beliefs because he did not want to offend those around him. Thomas Jefferson on the other hand was more concrete in his beliefs and was not easily persuaded by the politics of others. Very interesting!!! As you can tell, I had learned something new.
Recommended for more of an adult audience...all in all very interesting to watch. I am sure the DVD's would be released to rent at some point soon.

Erika,
I really wanted to see this, but don't have HBO. I didn't read the book, though I had wanted to. I guess I should get it. I hope I can rent the movie sometime.
Mimi
the only reason we have HBO, it comes with the job-we do have it blocked but we have a channel where you can choose the programs so you don't have to actually watch anything else. We want to get the DVD's too when they come out.
